JERUSALEM, May 13 (UPI) -- Israeli former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert was sentenced to prison Tuesday for accepting bribes while mayor of Jerusalem and after he was elected prime minister. He was sentenced to six years in prison.
Olmert served as prime minister from 2006 to 2009. From 1993 to 2003, he was mayor of Jerusalem.
Prosecutors alleged he double-billed government agencies for travel, exchanged cash for favors with an American businessman, and acted in the interest of his former law partner's clients while in office.
The former prime minister was convicted in August 2012 of breach of trust and in March 2014 for bribery relating to a controversial Jerusalem housing project called Holyland.
In addition to his six year prison sentence, the judge reportedly also ordered Olmert to pay a fine of approximately $289,000.
