MADRID, March 14 (UPI) -- Seven people who allegedly recruited militants to fight with the Syrian rebels have been charged by Spanish authorities, the Interior Ministry announced Friday.
Officials said one of the arrests was made in the city of Malaga, CNN reported. Three more were made in Melilla, a Spanish enclave on the coast of Morocco, and three in Morocco.
One of those arrested was the leader of the recruitment ring, officials said.
The ministry said one of those arrested had returned from Syria. Officials fear that extremist fighters could return to Spain to carry out terrorist actions.
Ten years ago, on March 11, 2004, Islamic extremists set off coordinated bombs on commuter trains in Madrid, killing 191 people and wounding about 1,800.
