Eight alleged al-Qaida-linked terrorists arrested in Spain

CEUTA, Spain, June 21 (UPI) -- Spanish police said Friday they arrested eight people suspected of working with al-Qaida to send jihadi fighters to Syria.

"We have broken up a network responsible for sending combatants to al-Qaida-linked terrorist groups operating in Syria," Spain's Interior Ministry said in a statement.

The alleged terrorists were all Spanish Muslims operating in Ceuta and the Moroccan city of Fnideq, the RT news agency reported.

The network had already sent at least nine Ceuta fighters to join the opposition against Syrian President Bashar Assad, the Spanish daily newspaper El Pais reported.

The eight individuals are accused of giving funding to, indoctrinating and facilitating travel for would-be fighters, the BBC reported.

"Dozens of people, some minor, had left both Ceuta and Moroccan territory under the cover of this terrorist network," the Interior Ministry said.
