Karzai orders help for child suicide bomber and family

KABUL, Afghanistan, Feb. 1 (UPI) -- Afghan officials said Saturday the government is helping the family of a 10-year-old girl who was allegedly forced to go on a suicide-bombing mission.

President Hamid Karzai met with the child Saturday and condemned Taliban recruitment of children to carry out terrorist attacks.

A written statement from Karzai's office said the president directed the government to help the girl and her family find better living conditions and get into school.

The girl, known as Spoghmai, was intercepted by security troops in southern Helmand province, where she was allegedly about to carry out a bombing attack on a military convoy.

The Khaama Press said the Taliban denied responsibility for the girl's reputed mission but have employed teenagers in the past to carry out suicide bomb attacks.
