Suicide car bomb kills 30, injures more than 50 in Nigeria

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- At least 30 people are dead and more than 50 injured in a suicide car bomb attack during rush hour in Maiduguri, Nigeria, authorities say.

The fire from the blast, in the part of the Borno state capital known as GSM Village, consumed two dozen vehicles and numerous roadside shops, the Daily Trust newspaper reported Wednesday.

Worshipers at a nearby mosque were reported among the dead.

"I strongly feel it was a suicide mission because the explosion occurred in a moving car, loaded with explosives in a heavy traffic heading somewhere," said Abdulkareem Haruna, a journalist who was near the scene at the time of the Tuesday attack. "It is sad and a calamity."

Military officials blamed Boko Haram militants.

In a statement, Borno state Gov. Kashim Shettima condemned the bombing, saying it occurred "at a time when peace is returning and being celebrated by residents."

The last major bomb attack in Maiduguri was in March.
