(UPI) -- Syrian opposition members and relatives of Abdelqader Saleh gathered in the Qatar desert to commemorate the fallen opposition leader.

Saleh was the renowned military leader of the Tawhid Brigades, one of the strongest opposition groups in Syria's northern city of Aleppo.

The gathering occured 20 km (13 miles) from downtown Doha. Qatar has been a strong backer of rebel groups in Syria since the start of the uprising. More recently Saudi Arabia though has taken the driver's seat as Qatar has gone through a transition of leadership.

Saleh died from Syrian Army air strikes. He had been trying to ease tensions with hardline Islamic militias like the Islamic State of Iraq and as-Sham (ISIS) before his death. The Syrian rebels have been plagued by infighting in recent months.

"He wanted a solution to stop Muslims fighting Muslims," Abu Abdallah al-Hamwi, the leader of another militia Ahrar as-Sham told Reuters.
