(UPI) -- Oil-rich Saudi Arabia says six shells landed near its border posts with Iraq and Kuwait on Wednesday but no damage was caused.
In a statement to the official Saudi Press Agency, border guard spokesman General Mohammed al-Ghamdi said, "Six mortar shells fell in an uninhabited area near the new al-Auja border guard centre of Hafr al-Batin in the Eastern Province. Thank God no damage resulted from it."
Ghamdi also said Saudi Arabia was in contact with neighboring countries in order to determine who was responsible for the shells.
Saudi Arabia has poor relations with the Iraqi government, led by Shiite Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, and has not had an ambassador in Baghdad since before the first gulf war in 1990-91 when Iraq under Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait.
