TOKYO, Nov. 19 (UPI) -- After arriving to assume her new post as U.S. Ambassador to Japan, Caroline Kennedy met with Vice Foreign Minister Akitaka Saiki, the ministry said.

During the 25-minute meeting Monday, the two agreed to strengthen the bilateral alliance between the two countries, Kyodo News reported.

Kennedy was scheduled to present her credentials to Japanese Emperor Akihito Tuesday during a ceremony at the Imperial Palace before officially beginning her work as ambassador, the news service said.

She is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida and other Japanese leaders Wednesday.

Kishida said Monday Kennedy's arrival in Japan was "very much welcomed."
