CAIRO, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- Tension with the United States could be good for both countries by forcing them to evaluate their relationship, the Egyptian foreign minister said Wednesday.
Nabil Fahmy also told the state-owned newspaper al-Ahram he believes the people of Egypt prefer to preserve the freedom they fought for in two revolutions instead of automatically meeting U.S. demands.
"In addition, this unrest will equally serve Egypt and the U.S. because both will reconsider and better estimate their relationship in the future," the minister added.
The Obama administration recently announced it is cutting military aid to Egypt. Egypt has been one of the biggest U.S. aid recipients since it made peace with Israel more than 30 years ago.
The announcement followed the ouster of President Mohamed Morsi and a crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood and other Morsi supporters.
The United States said it would continue to provide humanitarian aid that directly benefits the people of Egypt.
