BAGHDAD, Sept. 26 (UPI) -- Shootings and bombings across Iraq Thursday killed 22 people and wounded 51 others, security officials said.
An Interior Ministry spokesman said 11 people were killed and 35 wounded when four bombs exploded successively in a marketplace in the Baghdad suburb of Sabie al-Bour, China's state-run news agency Xinhua reported.
The explosions also destroyed shops and stalls, and burned out several vehicles, the spokesman said.
Seven people were killed and 15 wounded when a roadside bomb exploded in a market in Doura district in the southern Baghdad, damaging several nearby shops and stalls, police said.
In Baquba, a provincial employee was shot and killed by armed men, a police official said. Separately, another provincial employee was wounded.
Also in Baquba, a government-backed paramilitary fighter was killed when a roadside bomb exploded near his home, police said.
In northern Iraq, two government-backed paramilitary fighters were shot and killed by gunmen who stormed a checkpoint in Shirqat, north of Baghdad, local police said.
Earlier this month, the U.N. Assistance Mission for Iraq said nearly 5,000 civilians were killed and 12,000 injured in Iraq so far this year.
