SAN JUAN, Argentina, Sept. 9 (UPI) -- A Uruguayan missing since May when he went on a motorcycle trip to Chile was found by men measuring snow depths in the Andes Mountains, officials said.
The men Sunday found Cincunegui Raul Fernando Gomez, 58, who has been missing since May 11, when he tried to walk across the mountains from Petorca, Chile, to the Barreal area in Argentina after his motorcycle became disabled, Diario de Cuyo of San Juan, Argentina reported Monday.
He became disoriented during a snow storm but found the shelter where he had been since.
Fernando-Gomez told his rescuers he survived in the shelter by melting snow, eating provisions he had as well as supplies in the shelter, and by capturing rats in a trap he built, one of the men, Lucio Gallardo, said.
"We gave him some raisins and water, but not so much because we knew of his delicate condition," Gallardo told the newspaper Sunday.
The men notified law enforcement personnel who helped to transport Fernando-Gomez to a San Juan hospital Sunday by helicopter, officials said. Doctors said he lost about 44 pounds and was malnourished and dehydrated.
