Kidnappers who called off plot get prison in China

BEIJING, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- A pair of kidnappers in China who abandoned their ransom plans when they discovered their victim's family was poor were sentenced to prison.

The Jiaojiang District People's Court in Taizhou heard the defendants, whose surnames were reported as Lu and Xie, spent more than $1,600 on their plot to kidnap and ransom an 11-year-old girl, but they ended up releasing the girl with about $80 compensation when they discovered her family was poor and the kidnappers noticed a high number of police on the street, Shanghai Daily reported Wednesday.
