Bus crash kills 19 in India

NEW DELHI, May 27 (UPI) -- A passenger bus in India went out of control Monday and fell into a water canal, killing at least 19 people and injuring 23, police said.

Police said it appeared the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to plunge into the Hazara canal in Etah district in northern Uttar Pradesh State, the Press Trust of India news agency reported. The fate of the driver was not immediately known.

It was not clear how many passengers were on the bus to New Delhi, but police said 19 people died and 23 were injured. The injured were rescued by a police team with the help of local residents and were admitted to nearby hospitals.

Rescue operations were continuing.
