University chief takes step to halt dormitory food poisonings

CAIRO, May 1 (UPI) -- The grand imam of Cairo's Al-Azhar University has ordered the formation of a special committee following incidents of dormitory food poisoning, students said.

Leaders of the university's student union met with Ahmed El-Tayyeb after 179 students who ate at the school's dormitory cafeteria were hospitalized with food poisoning this week, Ahram Online reported.

It was the second case of mass food poisoning at the school in a month.

On April 1, 500 students got food poisoning after eating at the same cafeteria.

During a meeting with student union representatives Tuesday, El-Tayyeb promised that a committee would closely monitor food outlets on campus for hygiene and provide the university's council with monthly reports.
