STOCKHOLM, Sweden, April 4 (UPI) -- Swedish legislators are debating whether people who undergo sex-change surgery should be required to become "infertile."
The discussion could be academic, the news agency TT reported. A Stockholm court ruled in December that forcing the transgendered to be sterilized violates the European Convention on Human Rights.
But the issue is an emotional one. Two legislators urged that the current policy remain in place in an op-ed published Tuesday in a Christian newspaper, Dagen.
Tuve Skanberg and Annelie Enochson said that allowing transgendered men to keep the ability to become pregnant and give birth would create a "third gender." Skanberg and Enochson, both members of Parliament, also said the great majority of people who change genders want to be infertile.
Parliament is expected to vote soon on the government proposal to drop the requirement of infertility.
