1 in 4 Israeli Holocaust victims poor

TEL AVIV, Israel, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- One in every four Holocaust survivor in Israel is poor and more than one-third live alone, the Foundation for the Benefit of Holocaust Victims in Israel said.

The foundation said Sunday -- International Holocaust Remembrance Day -- 87 percent of Holocaust survivors who request financial assistance live on less than $1,346 per month, and 58 percent live on about $800 per month.

About 70 percent of survivors who seek assistance from the foundation cannot afford dental care, and 18 percent need financial assistance for eyeglasses, Haaretz reported.

Approximately 10,000 Holocaust survivors have no family, and more than one-third live alone, the foundation said.

Meanwhile, an annual survey by the Massuah Institute for the Study of the Holocaust found 57 percent of teenagers think "the whole world is against us and we have nobody to rely on but ourselves."

"This feeling that was typical of the mood in the 1950s and '60s was replaced in the '80s and '90s by expressions of international belonging and solidarity, as part of faith in the peace process," said Massuah director Aya Ben Naftali.

The Massuah poll questioned 1,000 students over the past three months, Haaretz reported. The margin of error of the poll and polling method was not reported.
