Shoe thrown at Breivik during trial

OSLO, Norway, May 11 (UPI) -- The trial of confessed mass murderer Anders Breivik was interrupted Friday by a man who threw a shoe at the defendant in an Oslo, Norway, courtroom.

The unidentified man yelled, "Go to hell! You killed my brother," before he was led away by security personnel, RIA Novosti reported.

The shoe struck Breivik's lawyer.

Breivik, 33, has confessed to killing 77 people last July 22 in a bomb attack at a government building in downtown Oslo and in a shooting spree on nearby Utoya Island. Breivik pleaded not guilty to terrorism charges, claiming "self-defense" and saying his actions were justified because he was waging war against multi-culturalism and what he termed a Muslim invasion of Europe.

During the trial Friday, Breivik interrupted the testimony of a private boat owner who tried to rescue frightened people as they swam away from the island, Norwegian Broadcasting reported.

Breivik called his targets -- mainly Labor Party youth members attending a summer camp -- "political extremists" but claimed he was only trying to scare them by firing at boats.

"If I'd wanted to, I could have shot them," Breivik claimed, referring to the rescuers. "But I viewed them as civilians."
