Nigerian police station bombed, 1 dead

KANO, Nigeria, Jan. 30 (UPI) -- The militant Islamic group Boko Haram was suspected in a police station bombing that killed at least one person in the Nigerian town of Kano, authorities said.

The victim of the Sunday bombing was a civilian in a shop near the police station, the Nigerian Tribune reported.

Leaflets attributed to Boko Haram were being distributed, urging residents of the northern Nigeria community to "persevere with the difficult situation" as the group continues its attacks.

The newspaper said the leaflets contained a message from Abubakar Shekau, leader of the militant sect, that said, "Boko Haram is aware of the atmosphere of inconvenience our operations have thrown people into."

Boko Haram, which has claimed responsibility for a Jan. 20 attack that killed 186 people in Kano, has said it wants to create an Islamic state in the northern part of the country.
