Explosion kills 14 Pakistani soldiers

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- A bomb explosion, detonated remotely, killed 14 Pakistani paramilitary soldiers in a convoy in Baluchistan province, officials said.

The soldiers were clearing land mines near Buleda town, near the border with Iran, when they were attacked late Wednesday, two paramilitary officials told CNN. The explosion also destroyed two paramilitary vehicles.

A gun battle ensued between the soldiers and their attackers but no details were immediately available.

It was not clear who was responsible for the attack, but militants and separatists are reported to be active in the region.

A day earlier, a suspected U.S. drone strike killed four alleged militants in Pakistan's North Waziristan tribal region -- the first such attack after a lull following the Nov. 26 NATO airstrike in which 24 Pakistani soldiers died.
