LONDON, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- A London jury began deliberating Thursday in the trial of two white men charged with killing a black high school student in the British capital 18 years ago.
Justice Colman Treacy, who presided over the trial of Gary Dobson and David Norris at the Old Bailey, spent almost two days summing up the case. He told jurors they should take as much time as they need to decide whether the defendants are guilty of the murder or manslaughter of Stephen Lawrence, The Guardian reported.
Treacy warned jurors Wednesday not to decide the case based on sympathy for Lawrence's family or anger at his death. Lawrence, 18, who hoped to study architecture, was stabbed as he and a friend waited for a bus and bled to death as they tried to get away.
Dobson, 36, and Norris, 35, deny the killing. The evidence included recordings made secretly by police of the two and their friends making racist comments.
Jurors discussed the case for about 90 minutes Thursday before they were dismissed for the day.
