MANILA, Philippines, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- Lawyers for former Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said they have asked the court to permit her to leave her hospital room for some time each day.

The former official is currently under detention at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center in Quezon City facing charges of vote fraud.

Arroyo's lawyers filed an omnibus motion with the Pasay Regional Trial Court asking that she be allowed to leave her room for at least an hour each day to get some sun, the Philippine Daily Inquirer reported Wednesday.

The motion was accompanied by a certificate from her doctor explaining that Arroyo suffers from a Vitamin D deficiency and needs a daily dose of sunshine.

The motion also asks that Arroyo be allowed to attend mass at the medical center chapel and permitted to use a radio and television.

Arroyo suffers from a number of health problems, including a metabolic bone disorder.
