Serbian official resigns over EU delay

BELGRADE, Serbia, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- Former Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Delic says there is no guarantee Serbia will be made a candidate for EU membership in March.

Delic, who resigned from his post Friday in response to the EU's decision to postpone making Serbia a candidate for membership, said talks must continue with all factions of the European Union "because the only alternative is to freeze the Kosovo conflict, and self-isolation," B92 TV reported.

Serbia's ruling Democratic Party said part of Delic's duties in regard to EU membership will be transferred to the government's EU Integration Office.

Serbia had been viewed as likely to get candidacy until recent clashes between local ethnic Serbs and North Atlantic Treaty Organization Troops in Kosovo. Dozens of NATO troops were injured last week after local Serbs opened fire at soldiers attempting to clear roadblocks erected in Serb-majority areas of north Kosovo, the Wall Street Journal reported.
