20 NATO tanker trucks burn in Pakistan

QUETTA, Pakistan, Dec. 8 (UPI) -- A rocket attack on a NATO terminal in southwestern Pakistan destroyed at least 20 tanker trucks Thursday, police said.

Arshad Malik, a police officer, told the British newspaper The Daily Telegraph the fire was so intense no one could get close to the burning trucks. He said the attack on the terminal in Quetta was carried out after sunset under cover of darkness.

"Two armed men were on motorcycles. They opened fire and launched a rocket at the terminal before escaping," he said.

"The fire is so great that we don't know if there are casualties."

Pakistan closed the border with Afghanistan after a U.S. airstrike hit Pakistani border posts on Nov. 26. That has left hundreds of trucks used to haul fuel and other supplies to NATO forces in Afghanistan sitting in terminals.

A similar closing last year was followed by a rash of attacks on NATO trucks. About half of NATO supplies are shipped to Karachi and then trucked to Afghanistan.
