LJUNGBY, Sweden, Nov. 28 (UPI) -- A woman hunter who fired a bullet that passed through an elk and killed a cross-country skier is on trial on a manslaughter charge in Sweden.
The woman, 32, whose name was not reported, was hunting with friends almost a year ago when the man was shot, The Local reported.
Just after shooting her first elk, the woman and her companions noticed someone on the ground beyond the animal.
"As we walked up to the animal, we saw something on the ground a bit further away, behind the elk," the woman told police.
The bullet that killed the elk apparently went through its neck , continued for almost 200 feet and struck a 71-year-old cross-country skier, killing him instantly.
"We tried to resuscitate him but it was impossible," the woman told police.
Prosecutors said the woman neglected to take proper safety precautions before firing the fatal shot.
"It's important to test where the boundary for carelessness lies and the court needs to look at all the circumstances," said prosecutor Marcus Ostrander.
