JERUSALEM, Oct. 25 (UPI) -- The Israeli soldier held captive by Hamas for more than five years reported to a hospital in central Israel Tuesday for medical tests, the military said.

Gilad Shalit, 25, was accompanied by his parents Noam and Aviva when he arrived at a facility in central Israel for an initial examination and a series of comprehensive tests, the Jerusalem Post reported.

In addition to a slight injury to one of his hands caused by shrapnel, Shalit was found to be suffering from a vitamin deficiency caused by lack of sunlight.

The army said in the coming days he would undergo his first security debriefing.

On Monday Israeli President Shimon Peres visited Shalit at his home in the northern Israeli town of Mitzpe Hila near the Lebanese border.

"You have no idea how emotionally moving it is for me to meet you here in your home, alive and well," Peres told Shalit. "I may be the oldest person here, but I'm the most excited."
