Gunfire at Yemen protest leaves 14 dead

SANAA, Yemen, April 27 (UPI) -- Gunfire broke out at an anti-government rally in Yemen's capital Wednesday and medical personnel said at least 14 demonstrators died.

The Kuwait news agency KUNA reported about 200 other people were injured when Yemeni security forces and militants in civilian clothes started shooting in Sanaa's Change Square.

"Fourteen people have been slain by live ammunition, and more than 200 others were injured with varying degrees, including 10 in critical condition," KUNA quoted a medical source at a field hospital in the square as saying.

Witnesses said the rally had been peaceful until militants disrupted the protesters as they passed the building housing the state-run TV network. Security troops and other gunmen in plainclothes arrived from a camp at Sanaa's Stadium for the tribal supporters of Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh and opened fire.

The demonstrators are demanding Saleh give up power.
