JAKARTA, April 11 (UPI) -- An Indonesia legislator resigned after being caught watching pornography on his tablet computer during a House plenary session, the deputy speaker said.
House speaker Priyo Budi Santoso said he appreciated the Monday resignation of the prominent member of the Prosperous Justice Party known only as Arifinto, The Jakarta Post reported.
"I appreciate our colleague from the PKS (Prosperous Justice Party) deciding to resign after the tragedy that happened the other day. This is a lesson for everyone, and we have to give our appreciation. (This is a good thing to do) before this issue is perpetuated and brings unexpected impacts," Priyo said.
Arifinto said his decision was made as a matter of conscience "without any coercion from anyone or any elements, for the sake of myself and the party's honor," the Jakarta Globe reported.
Indonesia is one of the world's most populous Muslim nations where pornography is strictly prohibited and the PKS was staunchly behind an anti-pornography law passed in 2008, the Globe said.
Arifinto has also been ordered to recite the entire Koran at least once, cover to cover, within 30 days, the bloggingindo site reported.
