ATHENS, Greece, April 4 (UPI) -- Libya's acting foreign minister told Greece's prime minister embattled Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi wants to end the fighting, Greece's foreign minister said.

"It seems that the Libyan authorities are seeking a solution," Greek Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas said after Abdul Ati al-Obeidi met with Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou in Athens Sunday.

The meeting came amid reports at least two of Gadhafi's sons were proposing a resolution to the Libyan conflict that would involve pushing their father aside to make way for a transition to a constitutional democracy under the direction of Gadhafi son Seif al-Islam Gadhafi.

It is not clear if Gadhafi, 68, has agreed to the reported proposal backed by sons Seif and Saadi Gadhafi, The New York Times reported.

A person close to the sons said the elder Gadhafi appeared willing to go along.

The Greek foreign minister said in a statement Greece was committed to seeking a "political, diplomatic solution" to the Libyan crisis, where government forces are battling rebels seeking to end Gadhafi's decades-old rule.

"We reiterated the clear message from the international community -- respect for and full implementation of U.N. resolutions, an immediate ceasefire to stop the violence, particularly against the civilian population of Libya," the Greek Foreign Ministry statement said.

Papandreou has been talking by phone with the leaders of Qatar, Turkey and Britain over the past two days, pan-Arab TV network a-Jazeera reported Monday.

Obeidi planned to travel on to Malta and Turkey, Droutsas said.

While it has not participated in the air strikes, Greece has provided territorial-water access to French aircraft carriers southwest of Crete and gives permanent territorial access to NATO and U.S. forces, al-Jazeera said.
