Prince William, Kate raise cancer funds

LONDON, Dec. 19 (UPI) -- Prince William and his fiancee Kate Middleton have made their first public appearance since announcing their engagement, British officials said.

The couple attended a Christmas variety show Saturday to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust, Sky News reported.

Joking with onlookers, William told a group of teenagers dressed as elves they had "cool hats."

The soon-to-be bride smiled, but said nothing.

William was the guest of honor at the fundraising gala in Thursford, in Norfolk, which showcased a cast of professional musicians and dancers.

The Thursford Christmas Spectacular was a private event, but during intermission William met a group of young cancer patients from Norfolk and Hertfordshire.

Proceeds from the event will go toward construction of the first specialist cancer unit for young people at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge.

Meanwhile, William's younger brother Harry was recently presented with a prestigious German award in recognition of his charity work, but he deemed himself unworthy of the honor.

He said he was "hugely humble" after receiving the Golden Heart award during a televised fundraising event in Berlin.

He said he would accept the award on behalf of others who have done more. "I have done very little," Harry said.
