Aug. 3 (UPI) -- Michigan pro-Trump attorney Stefanie Lambert Junttila has been criminally charged in a 2020 election conspiracy to gain illegal access to voting machines.

Multiple charges authorized by a grand jury were filed against Junttila by special prosecutor D.J. Hilson and were revealed on Thursday.

Hilson said in a statement that election clerks in Michigan had been deceived into turning over their tabulators.

He said Junttila is charged with improper possession of a voting machine, conspiracy to improperly possess a voting machine, conspiracy to gain unauthorized access to a computer system and willfully damaging a voting machine.

"These charges were authorized by an independent citizens grand jury," Hilson said in a statement emailed to UPI. "Protecting the election process is of the utmost importance for our state and county. This investigation and prosecution is an important step in that direction."

Junttila's attorney Michael Smith released a statement that accused the special prosecutor of misconduct.

"Hilson failed to advise the judge and jury of statutes, constitutional law, and legal precedent set by a higher court. He has a continuous obligation to update the court of the law and has yet to do so as of the date and time of arraignment of Stefanie Lambert," Smith's statement said. "My client was a zealous advocate for her clients and she did not violate the law and intends to sue Hilson for malicious prosecution."

On Tuesday, Hilson criminally charged last year's GOP Michigan Attorney General nominee Matthew DePerno with undue possession of a voting machine and conspiracy in connection with former president Donald Trump's multi-state efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election.

Hilson was appointed as a special prosecutor by Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel.

In July, Nessel charged 16 fake electors on felonies including election law forgery and conspiracy. The people charged signed documents falsely claiming to be legally qualified electors for the state in the Electoral College in the 2020 election.
