Police told the New York Daily News that one 38-year-old man died on the scene and about a dozen others were transported to area hospitals. Officials didn't release the names of any of the involved.

WNBC reported police made no arrests.

"We had a terrible shooting in Brownsville tonight that shattered a peaceful neighborhood event," New York Mayor Bill de Blasio tweeted. "Our hearts go out to the victims. We will do everything in our power to keep this community safe and get guns off our streets."

Witnesses said shots rang out while the park was crowded with people for the block party.

"There were a lot of people just chilling and having a good time," Kaseem Collins told the Daily News.

"We all started running. I ran as fast as I could away from everyone. I thought I was going to get shot."
