Trump holds U.S. workforce advisory board meeting

March 6 (UPI) -- President Donald Trump and some two dozen other members of the newly formed American Workforce Policy Advisory Board met Wednesday to discuss ways to lower the unemployment rate.

It was the first meeting of the board, which is co-chaired by Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and adviser Ivanka Trump. Also in attendance at the meeting were Apple CEO Time Cook, IBM CEO Ginni Rometty and a number of other business leaders and lawmakers.

Ivanka Trump said the group discussed a number of goals, including a promoting multiple pathways to good-paying jobs, improving information about the job market, modernizing candidate recruitment and training practices, and measuring and encouraging employer-led training and investments.

"With record low unemployment rates across all demographics, we will continue to focus on fostering inclusive growth that lifts up all of our citizens," she said. "We are taking advantage of this incredible moment to ensure America retains its leadership role."

Trump signed an executive order in July establishing the advisory board, which is meant to support "forgotten" Americans through workforce development. It also is intended to expand the number of apprenticeships in the country.
