Feb. 9 (UPI) -- A Las Vegas police officer recently indicted on child sexual assault charges had an hours-long standoff with fellow police officers before he was taken into custody on Thursday.

Bret Theil, 38, was indicted on Wednesday for six counts of sexual assault of a child under 14 and six counts of first-degree kidnapping, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported. After the charges were filed, a warrant was put out for Theil's arrest.

Police located Thiel later that night in a desert area in Las Vegas' northwest valley area after getting calls about a suicidal man, the Las Vegas Sun reported.

A SWAT team was called in to assist with the standoff, which didn't end until approximately 6 a.m. the next morning when he was taken into custody and booked.

Prosecutors in the case said that Thiel threatened the victim via email after learning an indictment was coming.

Thiel has been with the Las Vegas Police Department since 1998 and makes close to $100,000 annually, as well as $50,000 in benefits. The Review-Journal reports that he is expected to be suspended without pay pending trial.
