Oct. 27 (UPI) -- President Donald Trump welcomed the costumed children of White House reporters to the Oval Office on Friday, treating them to some candy and jokes at the media's expense.

About 10 children visited the president -- one dressed as a unicorn, a few invoking their favorite Star Wars characters -- after the daily press briefing.

Trump handed out candy to the children and joked about his discord with members of the media.

"I cannot believe the media produced such beautiful children," he said. "How the media did this, I don't know.

"Are you going to grown up and be like your parents?" he asked the kids. "Don't answer that. It can only get me in trouble."

The small gathering is a preview of a bigger Halloween event first lady Melania Trump scheduled for Monday. The White House is hosting children and their parents from more than 20 school in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C., on the South Lawn for festivities.

The president and first lady will be handing out cookies made by the White House pastry kitchen on the festooned South Portico.
