Sept. 27 (UPI) -- A rockfall on Yosemite National Park's iconic El Capitan granite monolith killed one park visitor and injured another Wednesday afternoon, the National Park Service said.

The incident happened at about 1:55 p.m. along the popular Waterfall Route climbing path above Yosemite Valley in central California, according to a park service news release.

The service deployed a helicopter, park rangers and search-and-rescue workers to assess the situation on El Capitan Wednesday afternoon.

The release said workers were trying to transport the injured visitor out of the park to receive medical attention.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the rockfall happened at the peak of climbing season in the park.
