Aug. 30 (UPI) -- Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain, who has been receiving treatment for brain cancer, plans to return to Washington next week when the U.S. Senate reconvenes. "We are expecting him back next week," a staff member in McCain's Washington office told United Press International on Wednesday.

The U.S. Senate adjourned on Aug. 3 and is scheduled to return to the chamber on Sept. 5, one day after Labor Day.
While the Senate was in recess, McCain underwent his first round of chemotherapy treatment in Arizona.
McCain was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive type of brain tumor one day after a procedure on July 14 in Phoenix to remove a blood clot above his left eye.
He returned to the Senate on July 25 and three days later cast a vote against a repeal of the Affordable Care Act. He joined all 48 Democrats and two other Republicans to vote against the bill, which failed 51-49.
McCain is chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, which is set to debate the National Defense Authorization Act, the annual bill that sets military policies, as soon as next week.
Last week, McCain criticized Trump over his pardon of former Maricopa County, Ariz., Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
On Tuesday, McCain also celebrated his 81st birthday.
"Thank you for all the birthday messages! It's been wonderful celebrating with family in #Arizona doing the things we love most," McCain posted on Twitter. He included photos of himself hiking, barbecuing and blowing out birthday candles.
