Pilot dies in crash of World War I replica biplane

The pilot was identified as Javier Fernando Arango, a noted collector of World War I aviation.

April 24 (UPI) -- The pilot was killed when his World War I replica biplane crashed near Paso Robles, Calif., Municipal Airport, police said.

He was identified as Javier Fernando Arango of Los Angeles, the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office announced Sunday. Arango was a board member emeritus of the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., and a collector of World War I-era aircraft. He was the sole person aboard the plane when it crashed.

The plane took off from the airport on Sunday morning and flew for several minutes before it fell into a nearby field.

The sheriff's office is conducting a death investigation, and Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board representatives will conduct a crash investigation.
