April 24 (UPI) -- The pilot was killed when his World War I replica biplane crashed near Paso Robles, Calif., Municipal Airport, police said.
He was identified as Javier Fernando Arango of Los Angeles, the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office announced Sunday. Arango was a board member emeritus of the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., and a collector of World War I-era aircraft. He was the sole person aboard the plane when it crashed.
