WASHINGTON, Sept. 13 (UPI) -- U.S. News & World Report's annual ranking of colleges, released Tuesday, named Princeton University its No. 1 college for the sixth year in a row. In the category of national university, the New Jersey college place ahead of more than 18,000 schools assessed, of which 1,374 are ranked. It was followed closely by Harvard University, and the University of Chicago and Yale University which tied for third place.

The institutions receive rankings from the media company based on 15 classifications of academic quality, including retention, graduation rate performance, faculty resources, financial resources and alumni giving.
Rankings were also offered for colleges in different categories. Williams College, in Massachusetts, was No. 1 in the classification of national liberal arts colleges, which focus on undergraduate education, and concentrate on humanities or social sciences. Elon University of Kentucky led the category of regional universities in the South; Nebraska's Creighton University was the Midwest's top regional university, Texas' Trinity University the West's, and Providence, R.I., College led in the North.
After Princeton, Harvard, Chicago and Yale, the top 20 national universities, in order, were Columbia, Stanford, MIT, Duke, the University of Pennsylvania, Johns Hopkins, Dartmouth, Cal Tech, Northwestern, Brown, Cornell, Rice, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, Washington University in St. Louis, and tied for 20th position, Emory, Georgetown and the University of California Berkeley.
