University of Michigan ranks as best U.S. public college in worldwide list

WASHINGTON, Sept. 6 (UPI) -- The University of Michigan is the highest-ranked public university in the United States, coming in at 23rd in a list filled with Ivy League schools and some of the most prestigious universities in Europe and Asia.

The QS World University Rankings for 2016/2017 ranks the world's top universities, including private and public institutions. The top 25 universities include institutions in the United States, China, Australia, Switzerland, Singapore and the United Kingdom.

More than 700 schools are ranked in the list. The schools are ranked using six methods: academic reputation, employer reputation, student-to-faculty ratio, citations per faculty, international faculty ratio and international student ratio. Academic reputation is weighed the most heavily at 40 percent for the result.

3. Harvard University, United States.

4. University of Cambridge, United Kingdom.

5. California Institute of Technology (Caltech), United States.

6. University of Oxford, United Kingdom.

7. University College London (UCL), United Kingdom.

8. ETH Zurich - Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Switzerland.

9. Imperial College London, United Kingdom.

10. University of Chicago, United States.
