INDIANAPOLIS, May 2 (UPI) -- On the day before the Indiana primary, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump received an endorsement from perhaps the state's most legendary collegiate football coach -- former Notre Dame leader Lou Holtz.

Holtz, now a sports analyst for ESPN, announced his support of Trump in a video message.

"Greetings, I'm Lou Holtz, and I wholeheartedly endorse Donald Trump as the next president of the United States," he says in the video. "There are nothing but winners in Indiana."

Despite not having coached the South Bend, Ind., university's football team since 1996, Holtz wears a Notre Dame rugby-style shirt in the video. After leaving the school, Holtz coached the football team at the University of South Carolina before joining ESPN. Holtz also coached the New York Jets for one season in 1976.

"Honored to have received the endorsement of Lou Holtz - a great guy!" Trump tweeted in response.

The former coach's endorsement came a day ahead of the Indiana primary, which could further solidify Trump's lead in the Republican race.

Holtz, however, isn't the only former Hoosier State coach to lend the billionaire businessman support. Former Indiana University basketball head coach Bobby Knight and former Purdue University basketball coach Gene Keady have also endorsed Trump.

So, why does Holtz back Trump?

"The main reason I'm endorsing him, I've played on his golf course, I've stayed in his hotel," Holtz said. "He does nothing but go first-class in everything. He wants this country to be first-class, as well."
