Former DNC Vice Chair Gabbard: 'Sanders understands costs of war'

HONOLULU, March 25 (UPI) -- A Hawaii congresswoman who resigned a leadership post with the Democratic National Committee in order to endorse Sen. Bernie Sanders for president has cut an emotional new ad in support of his campaign.

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, who served as a coat medic in Iraq prior to running for office, has turned into a top Sanders surrogate on the campaign trail since she broke ranks with the DNC, which is officially neutral in the presidential race, but whose chairwoman, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz is a prominent backer of Hillary Clinton.

Gabbard has been critical of Clinton for her vote in 2002 to authorize the war in Iraq.

In the ad, an emotional Gabbard says: "I could not, in good conscience, stay back here in my beautiful Hawaii and watch my brothers and sisters in uniform go off into combat. These are people and friends who we never forget."

She goes on to say Sanders "understands the costs of war," citing his vote against the Iraq invasion.
