IOWA CITY, Iowa, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- "Girls" star Lena Dunham hit the campaign trail for former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton this week -- taking over the candidate's Instagram account.

Dunham, who had recently interviewed Clinton for her newsletter "Lenny," made her first campaign stop at the Manchester, N.H., headquarters for the Clinton campaign. She was joined by World Cup-winning retired soccer star Abby Wambach.

There, Vanity Fair reported she told supporters: "Nothing gets me angrier than when somebody implies that I'm voting for Hillary Clinton because she's a woman. It's not like we have some feminist version of beer goggles called 'estrogen lens' that just causes us to go walking up to the nearest vagina and vote for them"

Wambach joined Dunham in praising Clinton's credentials for office.

"I want to see Hillary Clinton in the office. She has amazing, amazing stamina. She's smart and she has been basically doing it by herself as a woman alone among all other men for how many years," she said. "It's time people. It's time for women to be seen as real equals."

Dunham trekked to Iowa City on Saturday to speak with Clinton supporters at a coffee shop. There, she recalled making a campaign video for Barack Obama's 2012 re-election campaign called "Your First Time." She said the experience inspired her to be more involved in politics.

The Guardian reported audiences at Clinton events were very receptive to Dunham.

Dunham has been stumping in style, with custom Hillary-inspired outfits for each day on the campaign trail.
