WASHINGTON, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- An independent watchdog for the Internal Revenue Service said Monday that suggestions recently put forth by some Republican presidential candidates to eliminate the tax agency is "silly" and makes no logical sense.
National Taxpayer Advocate Nina Olson told MarketWatch Monday that such an idea wouldn't work.
"I don't know how people think that would happen," she said.
Several GOP candidates, including Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, have said they would back such a move. In fact, in revealing his tax plan, Cruz said he would abolish the agency and make it easy for Americans to file taxes by simply writing them on a postcard.
"People talk about, 'Oh, all we need is a postcard.' Well, you're going to need some agency that you send a postcard to," Olson said. "And you're going to need some employees to process that postcard.
"It's just so silly."
In fact, Olson believes the opposite is true -- as evidenced by her praise for last week's omnibus spending bill that provided nearly $300 million in additional funding for the IRS.
"The additional funding will be extremely helpful," she said.
