WASHINGTON, June 20 (UPI) -- Things were buzzing on Capitol Hill Friday, and it wasn't just the usual political bickering.
Some 15,000 honey bees that had swarmed near the main Senate entrance of the U.S. Capitol Building were relocated Friday. The bees had taken over part of a tall tree by the time the U.S. Capitol Police spotted them. Police worried the bees would hurt someone, so beekeepers were called in.
"We've been joking that maybe they were here to celebrate National Pollinators Week," said Laura Condeluci, press spokeswoman for the Architect of the Capitol, adding the week-long recognition by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Department of the Interior and other federal agencies will end Sunday.
Three volunteer beekeepers, one who is a top congressional aide, worked to capture the queen bee and thousands of offspring.
