Oceania Insignia cruise fire kills three

MIAMI, Dec. 11 (UPI) -- A fire in the engine room on the luxury cruise liner Oceania Insignia on Thursday killed three people.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, the parent company of the 684-passenger Insignia cruise ship, said one crew member and two contractors died on board the vessel while it was docked in St. Lucia.

The three injured workers were taken to a medical facility in St. Lucia, but were declared dead. Two other crew members were taken to a medical facility for treatment to injuries.

"The fire was contained to the engine room and extinguished," a statement from Norwegian said.

All guests were uninjured and were taken off the ship. Guests and crew were put at local hotels until transportation to Miami was arranged.

"We are deeply saddened to learn that two contractors and one crew member did not survive. We extend our deepest condolences to their families during this very difficult time. The remainder of the cruise has been canceled," the statement said.

The Insignia was just one day into a 10-day cruise from San Juan, Puerto Rico, to Miami. The rest of the cruise was cancelled.

The cause of the fire wasn't reported.
