STATEN ISLAND, N.Y., Oct. 22 (UPI) -- A former Staten Island Catholic high school gym teacher was arrested Monday and charged with statutory rape on allegations she repeatedly had sex with a 16-year-old student.
Megan Mahoney, 24, faces 30 counts of felony statutory rape for "numerous" sexual encounters with an unnamed male student between Oct. 31, 2013 and Jan. 9. She also faces four counts of criminal sexual act because she and the teen engaged in oral sex.
Mahoney resigned from her post at Moore Catholic High School in January. Athletic director Richard Postiglione lost his job after the scandal became public knowledge in August.
Court papers say Mahoney, a former basketball star, and the teen, had liaisons at least twice a week during the two-month period. She was pressured to resign -- and halt the affair -- after the teen's ex-girlfriend spotted them together at a local pizzeria and called police.
Mahoney faces up to four years in prison for each charge if convicted. She is due back in court on Dec. 2.
