INDIANAPOLIS, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- A double-decker bus flipped over on an Indiana highway early Tuesday when the driver swerved to avoid vehicles involved in a crash.
The crash on Interstate 65 in Greenwood, Ind., at about 4:15 a.m. shut down the highway for several hours, police said. At least one person on the bus was seriously injured and more than a dozen others had minor injuries.
The Megabus was headed to Chicago from Atlanta and was scheduled to stop in Indianapolis. The highway was slick with rain at the time of the crash.
State Police Sgt. Rich Myers said that a few minutes earlier a sedan had been involved in a minor crash when the driver lost control and ricocheted off the barrier on the highway median.
"He was stopped there and the bus came along and clipped him the rear end, causing a pinball effect," Myers told the Indianapolis Star. "The car goes off to the right hand side into the ditch, and the bus goes off to the median where it strikes the cable barriers and overturns." Craig Steichen, a passenger on the bus, said he was asleep at the time of the crash.
"I just heard 'boom,' I rolled off and started to see things rolling around and glass flying and everything," he said. "After, I was just making sure I was in one piece."
Police said 35 apparently uninjured passengers were transported to a hospital in a city bus as a precaution and to wait for transportation.
