LOUISVILLE, Ky., Oct. 2 (UPI) -- A 21-year-old man was arrested and charged with the murder of a 12-year-old homeless boy in a Louisville park Tuesday.

Joseph Cambron is accused of stabbing Ray Allen Etheridge, who was found unresponsive at Cherokee Park and died later at University Hospital.

Police said Cambron, like Ray, was homeless and that the two had known each other for several weeks. He was arrested Wednesday night after he called the police, wanting to talk. He admitted to killing Ray and said he tried to hide the knife from police.

Ray was found by a bystander around 4:30 p.m. and was pronounced dead at Kosair Children's Hospital from multiple stab wounds.

His mother had reported him missing the night before, after she had checked him out of school early and the two had gone back to the park to wait for his stepfather to get done with work. Greater Clark School Superintendent Andrew Melin said reliable transportation was often difficult to find for Ray.

When they got back to the park, Ray's mother lost track of him, according to Lt. Todd Kessinger of the Louisville Metro Police Homicide Unit.

Cambron is the only suspect, Kessinger said, adding that there was no indication Ray was sexually abused. He is scheduled to be arraigned Friday.
