Emergency responders said Freeh was driving his 2010 GMC Yukon when they believe he drove off the road and struck a mailbox and a row of shrubs before coming to a stop against a tree. He was wearing a seatbelt.

State police said Freeh was airlifted to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire with serious injuries, including a broken leg.

Freeh, 64, is a former federal judge who served as FBI director from 1993 to 2001. He recently took on handling child sex abuse complaints against former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky.
