NYC Mayor de Blasio's police driver captured going through stop sign

NEW YORK, Feb. 21 (UPI) -- New York Mayor Bill de Blasio's vehicle was captured Thursday by WCBS-TV going through a stop sign in Queens.

The footage on the CBS Network's flagship station also showed the mayor's police driver going more than 40 mph in a 30 mph zone and speeding up to 60 when the limit increased to 45 mph. WCBS said the violations could have earned a civilian driver a license suspension.

The mayor's two-vehicle convoy was tracked after he left a news conference on fixing potholes. The violations were spotted two days after the mayor announced a major traffic safety initiative that includes a proposal to reduce the speed limit on many city streets to 25 mph.

"We've put a very bold plan before you, and we want the public to know we're are holding ourselves to this standard," de Blasio said Tuesday.

The New York Police Department told the TV station that the mayor's security detail sometimes has to bend the rules for safety reasons.
